Otter Island

Otter Island is a short boat ride away from Edisto Island, South Carolina. We visited Otter Island on the same trip where I discovered the painted survey map of Edisto on Wikipedia. We stuck to the beach, because it got pretty marshy deeper inland. The coolest part of Otter Island is that WWII pilots trained by shooting the beach and so old rusty shell casings are all over the place, even today, and as a group we collected dozens of them.

In the map, I mimicked the landform map symbols on the coastal survey. I think it’s too dominating, so I haven’t used them since. I was really happy with the process of watercoloring and, surprisingly, the hand lettering. My handwriting is terrible. But the hand lettering was a fun challenge. I utilized Ian Barnard’s serif capitals practice sheets to get started.
